<description>I am a curator and musician working across contemporary classical and experimental music, sound and interdisciplinary practices. In my curatorial work I strive to create conditions for artistic autonomy, this in the framework of close collaboration. My recent projects and research focus on the ways in which sound is embedded into different physical and social spaces.
BIOSasha Elina (pronounced Yélina) (b. 1994) is a curator, cultural producer and musician based in London.
Sasha is the artistic director of the Eternal series in London, showcasing and commissioning contemporary music from local and international artists across musical genres. Since November 2024, Sasha has been working at Brent Music Academy as the programme manager. In 2018, she co-founded Music Space Architecture, a platform and festival dedicated to different areas of interaction between music and architecture, sound and space.
Until 2021, Sasha lived and worked in Moscow, where she devised and produced concert series and interdisciplinary projects at institutions including the New Tretyakov Gallery, the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre, and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in independent spaces.
A vocalist and a flautist, Sasha performs composed and improvised music both solo and in various collectives. In March 2024, she self-released her debut album "Different Songs. Vol 1", featuring pieces by Seamus Cater, Tomás Cabado, Eva-Maria Houben, and Johan Lindvall.
Sasha was the founding member of The Same Ensemble (2013-2023), performed with the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (MCME), the Moscow Scratch Orchestra, Splitter Orchester, ГШ (Glintshake), and others.
Sasha was selected as a fellow of OneBeat 2019, a U.S. State Department Programme produced by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation. Sasha received her Music BA in Flute at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory (2017), and Music MA by Research at the University of Huddersfield (2023), with the thesis titled “Music curation as a site-oriented practice. Approaches to creating and staging listening experiences”.

STORY
“Eternal series was originally created in 2014 in Moscow — a city I was born and raised in. The first “Eternal May” title came about to accompany a single event, this name being co-created with composer Vladimir Rannev, whose piece was in the programme along with other living Russian composers. We sat in a cafe trying to describe the feeling that the concert programme should provoke: tender, pensive, sad… Eternal. The Moscow edition existed for about a year, hosted at the Central House of Architects on Granatny Lane, in its large exhibition hall.”

<description>MUSIC SPACE ARCHITECTURE&#38;nbsp;Music Space Architecture is an international, multilayered project dedicated to identifying and investigating different areas of interaction between music and architecture, sound and space. The principal aim is to nurture a balance between research practices, and, more broadly, events in the fields of contemporary art. Music Space Architecture curates commissioned projects and events, a festival, a conference, and an online platform that publishes text and other materials intended to deepen the study of each of the edition’s focal subjects.

The project was founded in 2018 by Sasha Elina and Yuri Palmin.

		<description>CELLAR DOOR
A series of music situations.

CELLAR DOOR events take place in open public spaces and peculiar venues, locating and closely connecting musical materials with their surrounding environment.

‘Cellar door’ is widely cited as one of the most beautiful combinations of words in the English language, purely in terms of its sound, regardless of its trivial meaning. The CELLAR DOOR series refers to this mystery, asking us to think of sound perhaps in a similar way. To consider how music situations flicker on the surfaces of ordinary urban and architectural structures, playing with the invisible grid of spaces they may occupy.

Whether site-specific, or site-adjusted, the works presented in the series pose the question of how music communicates with its surroundings, how multiple elements of the event coexist in open public environments, and where pedestrians’ and audiences’ paths cross. In the spirit of the accidental and the unnoticed, housing both bold and subtle gestures, the place and site of each CELLAR DOOR is illuminated and transformed.

SPATIAL COMPOSITION #3.X
"Spatial Сomposition #3.X" is a musical performance created by the composer Vladimir Gorlinsky. It is written for two improvising ensembles – 7 soloists and 10 performers – in a form of a text score that defines the overall composition, and sets the sound fields and trajectories for the participants. Their movements, the sounds they produce and their interactions in space exist in an unusual play that gives different musical and sensual results. The performance took place inside the halls and corridors, outside and even on top of the building.
Composer: Vladimir Gorlinsky
Instruments: megaphones, electronics, voice, string instruments, noise objects, accordion, flute, saw.
Duration: 110 minutes

ii.
GOST 111-35
A site-specific sound installation, the core idea of which is to reimagine and reveal the sonic memory of the glass.
The title of the installation refers to the official Russian State Standard number of clear sheet glass — “GOST 111-35”. Along with concrete and steel, this material was very popular in the Soviet Union in the 1930’s when one of the many prominent constructivist buildings of The Vesnin brothers’ Likhachev Palace of Culture (ZIL) was designed.
The signal, sent to the glass sheets through speakers to vibrate, is a 17-minute soundtrack travelling from one piece of glass to another with a delay, keeping an almost living constant music cycle throughout the course of the works presentation. It is composed of highly obscured sounds taken from film scenes of the Moscow urban environment, along with Soviet and Russian songs of different years — all of these blending with more abstract noise material that shapes the piece. Doubling the windows, the six repeated constructions of metal frames and glass sheets create an additional architectural layer — a visual, poetic simulation as a canvas for representing the core idea.
The chattering sound of the six glass sheets blended with surrounding noises, the transparent constructions subtly expanded the architecture of the atrium. GOST 111-35 seemed to be naturally embedded within the space, inviting the audience to discover and engage with it live. Thus, the setting of the installation presented an ambient piece of art that is neither exposed, nor is it utterly invisible.
Artists: Anton Kuryshev, Andrey Guryanov
Duration: 24/7

LARGO MA NON TANTO
"Largo ma non tanto" is a short film by Alexandra Karelina about a journey across an unfamiliar space, where architecture and music – static and moving – meet. The film was commissioned by Music Space Architecture and was first shown at the ZIL Cultural Center.
A group of artists was invited to think about how both spatial and sonic experiences could be traced, mixed and subsequently represented in the frame of the film screen. The video was shot in Japan by the film’s director, Alexandra Karelina. The music was created collaboratively by the composer and improvisor Darya Zvezdina, and electronic/noise musician Alexey Borisov. The film is narrated in Italian, with fragments of the "Travel Diary of Luigi Pelli of Aranno from Saint Petersburg to Lugano in 1829", prepared by the architectural photographer Yuri Palmin. In an illusionary space of unexpected resonances, knitted together by unrelated elements, "Largo ma non tanto" foregrounds the unstable object of the viewer’s personal reflection.
Directing, Camera, Edit: Alexandra Karelina
Producer: Sasha Elina
Music: Darya Zvezdina, Alexey Borisov
Sound: Alexandra Karelina, Darya Zvezdina
Text Editor: Yuri Palmin
Voice: Filippo Valoti-Alebardi

II Music Space Architecture Festival is postponed until further notice and will no longer take place in Russia.
As a Russian-born curator engaging with Russian and international art, I cannot continue my work as normal whilst the tragic events are unfolding in Ukraine. My responsibility now is to take things slowly, with respect to all the artists and audiences alike.
The programme will undertake some changes and will be presented later. I hope to find this project in peaceful times again.

Слава Україні!

		<description>CONTACT RESULTS IN CONTAGION

"Contact Results in Contagion" is a music, living sculpture and installation project by British artist and composer&#38;nbsp;Cameron Graham.
Exploring the concept of ‘liminality’, the ritual of transition from one state to another, the exhibition revolves around the autonomously sounding musical object — the “Poet Mechanic” — a hybrid instrument borne out of extreme transformations of the classic vinyl player. A traditional medium becomes a strange almost living mechanical performer that interacts with numerous resonant objects placed around it.
The installation, combining sound, sculpture and transformed space, takes the audience through a ritual process that addresses the relationship between the human and nonhuman, the mechanical and the poetic.

		<description>CONNECTION
A spatially distributed group improvisation, in which the physical and sonic spatial components play a major role. It connects nine Moscow-based music practitioners from different generations and backgrounds, and situates them inside an abandoned building of the Institute of Philosophy (now a part of the Pushkin Museum).

The musicians, performing separately in their own rooms and corners in the building, weave a highly complex sound environment in which no element is subordinate, but sonic and spatial impulses for interaction are strictly coordinated. For the audience, the focus of listening is constantly changing as they move through the piece in space, and as the performers’ decisions are being made within already running processes. Walking left along the corridor or down the stairs, the listeners form acoustic routes and

explore
distances between sounds they hear in different parts of the building.

		<description>RASSADA
An outdoor concert series in the Moscow city garden, as part of the parallel programme of the 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art. “Rassada” in Russian translates as “seedling”. Seven events throughout the year, situated (”planted”) in different corners of the garden, each were comprised of composed and improvised music. The events welcomed the extreme weather conditions (snow, cold, rain), as a principle aim was to place the musicians as close to nature as possible.
Curator — Sasha Elina
Co-curator — Mitya Nesterov
Supported by Triumph Gallery
Dates: October 2015 — August 2016
Location: Moscow Botanic Garden “Aptekarsky Ogorod”

Reality has an unusual setup. The Same Ensemble was formed in 2013. Sasha and cyril strive to play music that is ever-transparent, so that not only sound, but contact is heard; not only structure, but interacting personalities of both the participants. Each project of the ensemble is an integral whole made of independent parts — from new and experimental music to reduced, mysterious transcriptions of popular song. Transferring their programmes from place to place, from time to time, The Same Ensemble revise reality in the intimate sound of voice and instruments, producing stories of sounds’ interrelation with subtle emotional structures.

Repertoire:
— Music by Antoine Beuger, Dante Boon, Daniel Brandes, Seamus Cater, Johnny Chang, Yanka Dyagileva, Jürg Frey, Cameron Graham, Eva-Maria Houben, Valentin Silvestrov, Aleksandr Kneifel, Darya Zvezdina, Alexey Shmurak, Rishin Singh, cyril scheer.
— Soccer Committee (aka Mariska Baars) – Two albums / transcribed by cyril scheer
— cyril scheer – "Songs of Innocence" on William Blake’s poems
— Yegor Letov – "Children’s Songs" / transcribed by cyril scheer
— Daniil Pilchen – "Language of Flowers" song cycle

The ensemble performed in Croatia, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia. In 2021, The Same Ensemble contributed to a double-CD on Edition Wandelweiser.
In 2017 cyril scheer and Sasha starred in a film Tomorrow Will Be The Same by Petr Laden — a musical film in a form of post-apocalyptic mini-series episode, for which they created the soundtrack.
